Summer Blonde!

Summer is here and so is blonde hair!
There are a few ways to go about getting this look -- Balayage, Ombre, Foiling, or All-over High-lift blonde, just to name a few.

Balayage is painting the color or lightener on the hair. Depending upon the lightness you are looking for and the contrast that presents itself, you are likely to want to do a root shade to blend the base color with the level of light blonde so that it gradually blends into the highlight. When lifting more than five levels, you may not always be able to get it done in one session. For the health of your hair, we recommend using Olaplex. It rebinds the hair fibers to reduce damage during the lifting process. Dont be in a rush to see blonde; it take more than one appointment in some cases. So, if recommended, do it twice. You'll be happy you did, and your hair will too.

Ombre is similar to Balayage, but it id mostly directed to the bottom of your cut. Ombre is done to look like your highlights have  grown out. Generally you would like to keep the color of your Ombre toward a more natural tone, but sunbeaten. Besides the blonde though, ombre looks good with fashion colors in it. Its not too much and you can lift those ends until they are up. Because its off the scalp and instead on the ends of your hair, the process takes the stress away from your scalp.

Foil highlighting creates a finer effect. Its weaved in so that your natural color and the light blonde mesh together. You will want to keep as much of your natural color as a back drop to the lighter pieces, and with foils, you'll want to get closer to the root for a more natural look. The foils hold in the heat so you have more control over the lifting process than you do with Balayage or Ombre. Foiling also makes it easier to do lowlights or any other color in between the foils. You dont get that kind of control with painted highlights. With foils, applying darker colors to the hair is easier than painting dark colors on light hair. The process makes it easier to change tones or add multiple tones.

For all over blondes, you could go one of two ways: (1) high-lift color or (2) using a lightener. With more natural blondes or people with shorter hair, you have a better chance of achieving a Marilyn Monroe blonde. For those in the natural blonde family or have shorter yet darker hair, you can go the way of double process. Its not as popular as it used to be, but it is the best way to get the most striking blonde. Its also a look you must be ready for ---- with great blonde comes great responsibility! Enjoy your summer, blondies!

What exactly is a Blowout?

There are few things that are better than spending the day getting pampered at the salon, and when you leave, you have the added bonus of knowing that you look your best. Freshly styled hair always makes you look and feel beautiful, and you may even go to great lengths to keep that style as long as possible to keep your confidence elevated. What if there was a way to get that feeling whenever you want it? In today’s post, we will discuss blowouts and how they are the secret to every amazing salon experience.

At dsparada Color Salon, our experts know a thing or two about styling hair. We offer a variety of salon services that will help you achieve the looks you’ve always wanted. Whether you’re interested in keratin treatments, haircuts, or a fabulous color treatment, we can help! Ready to get luxurious locks that you will love? Contact dsparada Color Salon in Raleigh to schedule an appointment!

What Is a Blowout?
When you’ve visited the salon, you may have heard your stylist use the term blowout once or twice. You may have thought that the term was synonymous with blow drying your hair, but a blowout is so much more than that! A blowout is a service that is typically performed in between your regular haircut and color. Typically, a blowout service consists of the stylist washing your hair and then using their professional skills to dry and style your locks into a beautiful and volumized look!
At dsparada Color Salon, we offer three different blowout services, each giving you a unique and gorgeous look. Walk out with a sleek blowout that leaves your hair sleek and smooth, choose a volumizing blowout for extra bounce, or enjoy a carefree look with beachy waves! Make an
appointment now at dsparada Color Salon!

What You Need to Know Before Getting a Blowout
Getting a blowout is a fun way to mix up your style in between cuts and colors, or even enhance your look for a special event! That being said, most people go to the salon for a blowout without knowing exactly how to make the most of this volumizing ‘do.

Communicate With Your Stylist
If you go to a certain salon every time you get your hair done, then you most likely have a favorite stylist who sees you regularly and knows how you like your hair. However, if you’re in a different city or you’re just getting a blowout for a special event, then you may not see the stylist that you normally go to. If that’s the case, then it’s important that you communicate with whoever is doing your hair. For example, if you like to have your hair parted in a certain way, or you know that using a lot of products makes your scalp oily, then it’s important to let your stylist know before they wash and style your hair. Communicating any concerns will allow them to better tailor the service to your needs, resulting in a better overall experience.

Consider Your Options
As we mentioned earlier, a blowout is simply a service in which the stylist will wash and professionally style your hair. In most cases, blowouts result in smooth, straight hair with a bit of curl at the end, but if that’s not your style, then it shouldn’t sway you from getting a blowout. Blowouts come in all different varieties, and you can choose how you want to style your hair. Before your stylist gets started, ask if there are different styling options. Most salons allow you to choose if you want a straight or curly blowout and talking with your stylist may even open your eyes to other options that you didn’t even consider!

Extend the Life of Your Blowout
One of the best parts about getting a blowout is that this gorgeous style can last up to a week depending on the texture of your hair. Those with naturally oily scalps may be at a slight disadvantage, but it’s possible! If you notice that your roots are getting a bit greasy, try to tame them with your favorite dry shampoo. On the other hand, if you get out of bed in the morning and notice that your hair has lost its volume, simply flip your hair upside down and spray it with volumizing spray to give it new life!

Schedule Your Blowout at dsparada Color Salon!

Balayage? Ombre? Sombre? Everything you need to know!

When it comes to highlighting and hair techniques, it can be really hard to tell the difference considering they're so similar. Don't fret! We've got you covered. I'm gonna tell you how to differentiate so when you want something new for the summer, you'll be able to let us know exactly what you want!
Balayage is one of the most popular hair trends to ever happen! It actually derives from the French word meaning to sweep, as in to sweep in the hair lightener to create natural sun-kissed highlights. It's a hand painting technique that creates a soft graduation of lightness towards the ends. It's not just for blondes! It's great for every shades of color and adds a lot of dimension to the hair! This technique also helps prevent regrowth lines, and it allows the color to grow out a lot more naturally. The finished product is going to have you looking like you just spent a whole summer at the beach! Balayage typically also starts away from the roots towards the mid-shaft and all the way through to the ends.

Image result for ombre hairOmbré and Sombré on the other hand are completely different! They are considered a "style" rather than a "technique". Ombré comes from the French word meaning "shadow". Ombré is considered a more drastic and edgier version of balayage. Generally this works better on brunettes, or darker hair so it's less subtle! It's color that is shaded and graduated in tone throughout the hair.

Sombré on the other hand, is a lot softer than an Ombré. This style you'll probably see a lot more in blondes. The key to achieving a Sombré is to use more colors. Take the darker color found at the roots and subtly weave it through the hair to create a less abrupt contrast in the hair! It also allows a nice sunkissed look, with only 1-2 levels lighter than the base color. The point of it is, to be a seamless transition from the roots to the ends.

When you're ready, feel free to stop by/call the salon and get your new look for summer!

All about Keratin!

Don't you hate it when your hair never cooperates? When you're fresh out the shower and all you get is nothing but frizz?

Spring is here and Summer is approaching, which means it's the best time to take care of your hair with a Keratin Treatment! It's great for all hair types especially for the curls! We offer a Keratin Complex Smoothing Treatment and an Express Blowout, they allow up to six months for frizz free hair! It also reduces those curls and adds a smoothness and shine to your hair like you've never seen before! They also repairs the damage, making your hair 10x more manageable and healthier-looking with each treatment! It also cuts styling time and allows for easier blow drying. Who doesn't love that?!

Depending on which Keratin Treatment you chose from, it can last from 6 weeks to 6 months!

Express Blowout: This treatment takes only an hour and a half and it reduces frizz in all hair types. This express treatment utilizes and advanced co-polymer delivery system to penetrate the hair with keratin protein, delivering silky texture and more manageable hair. It'll soften the hair and decrease drying time for up to six weeks. Be sure to wait 8 hours after completing treatment to wash the hair and only use a sodium chloride free shampoo, which you can purchase here at DsParada!

Natural Keratin Smoothing Treatment: Takes up to 3 hours, so make sure you clear your schedule for it!  The ideal time to receive this service is directly after color service. The treatment will seal and extend the life of the color, making it appear more vibrant! Now keep in mind, after getting a treatment done, you will have to avoid getting your hair wet for 72 hours. I know that sounds like a hassle, but during this time you can also use the Keratin Complex Volumizing Dry Shampoo Lift Powder to absorb any oils that may accrue. You'll also have to wait to get any color done for two weeks and avoid putting your hair up in a pony tail or any bobby-pins in it, otherwise it'll leave an impression in your hair.

Once you get the treatment done, here are some products you can pick up to give your hair that extra umph! The Keratin Complex Infusion Therapy and the Colorproof Anti-Frizz Collection (it's also vegan)!

Clarifying your Hair

By: Siera Herrera
Everyone on the planet washes their hair. Whether it be with salon professional shampoo or the stuff you can get from the grocery store (which is perfectly fine). But do you really know what kind of shampoo you should be using? Shampoo for color treated hair? Damaged hair? Does your hair get too oily or dry? Do you use a ton of product? All those factors coincide with the type of shampoo you should use for you hair.

If you use a ton of products on your hair, you tend to have a lot of build up and excess oil from all the products. A Clarifying Shampoo is going to get rid of all the buildup and restore your hair natural shine. For color treated hair, a clarifying shampoo with no sulfates and salt is the way to go. Clear it up Detox Shampoo by ColorProof is Sulfate free, salt free, gluten free, and 100% vegan. It removes the icky product buildup without stripping your color while containing vitamins E & C. Vitamin E helps give you a healthier scalp while assisting with maintaining hair growth. Vitamin C helps build collagen which is crucial for hair growth and strengthening. Ask your stylist on your next visit for their favorite clarifying shampoo!  How often should I use a clarifying shampoo? It all depends on your hair!

Say you are a swimmer and you are in a chlorine pool every day. A green tint can accumulate overtime on your hair from the high amount of copper compounds that are put into pool water. To get rid of the tint, swimmers should use a clarifying shampoo weekly. If you are still feeling some build up, clarify twice a week. That goes for people that use a ton of product in their hair too. Using a lot of product or using it everyday can produce nasty build up that can make your hair feel icky. If you use a ton of product, you should clarify at least once a week. It really all depends on how much you put your hair through and the hardness of your water. If you are using minimal products and have softer water--- you probably only need to clarify once every other month. Using a clarifying shampoo to often, it can strip your hairs natural oils that keep your hair shiny and can cause dryness with overuse. So be careful!

To Clarify, start with a nickel or quarter sized amount of shampoo and work it into your scalp. Massage your scalp lightly for about 60 seconds, don’t be freaked out if it doesn’t lather, it may not! Not all shampoos lather. It all depends on your hair type and the shampoo you use! Rinse the shampoo out thoroughly. Next, you should use an even smaller amount and work that throughout the rest of your hair. Let the ‘suds’ sit on your hair for about 2 minutes. Letting the shampoo sit for a few minutes helps break down and release all that product build up. It’s important to rinse your hair thoroughly. If you have an unusual amount of buildup, repeat the process if your hair isn’t prone to dryness.

If you don’t want to use a shampoo, here are some remedies that have shown to have the same effects! Use some diluted vinegar all over your hair to reduce build up. Be sure to rinse out your hair very thoroughly. Worried about the smell? It goes away after your hair dries! Using a baking soda and apple cider vinegar paste is also effective! Put 1/3 of a cup of baking soda in a medium sized bowl and slowly pour in the vinegar (it can fizz) until a paste forms. You can add some essential oils like rosemary that can help boost hair growth and shine! Tea tree oil is also a good detoxer that has antibacterial benefits. Just add a few drops into your mixture!

Healthy hair is beautiful hair!

Why I Can’t Live Without These 3 Hair Products!

By: Brianna Gallo
There are so many different types of hair products being produced throughout the world. There are large varieties of shampoos and conditioners as there are hair sprays and voluminous products. Each product is made for a certain type of hair texture or style the buyer is looking for. Some individuals have super thick and curly hair while others may have thin and super straight hair. I like to think I fall somewhere in between the two of those extremes. I am also one to not want to do too much maintenance on my hair daily due to a lack of time to spend on my hair before my day starts (and just being a little lazy). On a daily basis, there are three products that I have learned to love so much, I don’t think I’d ever be able to live without them.

The first is ColorProof's TruCurl Curl Perfecting Creme. This curl creme is one that I easily apply to my hair when I first get out of the shower. This not only helps to keep my hair less frizzy but helps to enhance my natural curls to help control my hair as well as give each curl shape. Not only does this help do all of those things for my hair but the company is one I love since they are strictly cruelty free towards animals with all of their products!

The second product on my list of favorites is Goldwell’s Color Brilliance Serum Spray. This product is a great leave in conditioner that I apply all over my hair when its been towel dried or damp. It helps to regenerate the hair as well as protect any color that has been applied as well as keeping my hair looking shiny. I love how this makes my hair feel on a day to day basis when I use with my TruCurl crème and the pomegranate scent it has smells amazing.

The last and final product that I would never give up is for when I am having a lazy day and don’t have the time to wash my hair. ColorProof’s Fresh Start Soft Dry Shampoo helps to leave my hair feeling clean and smooth and removes excess oil or residue by them being absorbed with the rice starch. Not only does it do all of these things, but it is also used for heat protection for up to 450 degrees.

With these products alone, I am able to keep my hair feeling clean, frizz free and feeling smooth. For someone who wants a quick fix to frizz and dry hair, these products are also for you!

The Truth About Color Correction

Color correction can be a daunting term—but do we really understand the meaning? You would
think that if your hair is colored too dark, you can just put another color on and make it lighter.
But there is a very strong science behind this: color does not lift color. If you put a lighter color
on hair that is too dark, it will do absolutely nothing.

Color correction is primarily used in two cases: when colored hair is too dark, or the color is not
the right tonality. Too dark means that it does not suit your skin tone and eye color, or perhaps
it washes you out, emphasizes every line and pore on your face, or brings out your not so
beautiful features. Tonality means it may be too warm or too cool for your skin tone and/or eye
color, and something just isn’t quite right. This does not always mean that you are in for a
complete overhaul, but it does mean something must change for it to look more natural on you
and bring out your more flattering features.

Color corrections can be challenging because they all depend upon what was used to color the
hair, how many levels lighter the hair needs to go, or what kind of shift in tone is required. Box
dyes are by far the worst. Using metallics and high levels of ammonia to color the hair, they
blow the cuticle or the outer layer of the hair shaft and then the metallics are placed in the
cortex inside the hair shaft to make the color stay. They also typically color your ends a much
darker shade than the rest of the hair. If your hair is made too dark by a box color, the metallics
are going to resist and make it very hard to get that color out. How much lighter you want your
hair to be will determine how much work needs to be done.

Professional color is much easier to get out of the hair because many times the color was done
recently, and so it has not had complete time to set into the hair. Professional color also does
not contain metallics, so it’s easier to remove than box color. That being said, all is contingent
on what color we are shooting for. If you’re a dark brunette and want blonde hair, it may be as
simple as putting some highlights in such as foils or balayage to brighten things up. If you want
to go all-over light, then maybe a color remover is your best option. If the tone is not quite
right, that can always be adjusted with a simple color wash to bring out your best features and
make you glow.

Color corrections have come a long way from what they used to be. No longer do we have to
“strip” the hair, meaning put bleach all over your head and pray that the color lifts out.
Professional color companies have developed color removers, which open the outer layer of
the hair shaft and remove the color molecule (mechanically while shampooing it). These are
safe and effective and will not leave the integrity of your hair lacking. Once the color is
removed, you can apply your target shade.

Color correction does not have to be scary. The best thing you can do when faced with a color
challenge is call us at Dsparada and book a complimentary consultation so you and your stylist
can decide the best course of action to make you feel like yourself again!

Warm, Cool,or Conditioning Color

Can you believe it? Winter is here again. Its amazing how fast the year went by. Want to end it with a fun new hairdo? Today we are going to be talking about winter color. For me, the first thing that comes to mind is a ride through the Poconos looking at all the foliage that the season brings---- bright shades of yellows, reds, and oranges. For you, it may be a drive through somewhere more local, like Asheville, but the colors are the same warm, inviting variety. With all that in mind, imagine your hair color with some of those warmer tones. Which one would complement your hair and skin tone? When you see your colorist, ask which one would look best. Its important to look at your base color or your "roots". If your base color is gold or warm, you do not want to use cool tones. If you have ash or cool base colors, you would tone with a cooler color. Its a basic but effective guide to never making mistakes. You want to use a toner that is lighter than your roots, up to three levels....personally, I prefer the lightest option.

For example, lets say your hair is a light warm brown.  If you'd like a subtle but noticeable change, you could use a dark copper blonde toner, with light golden blonde highlights. If you were a light ash brown, you'd want to use a medium ash blonde toner accompanied by some light ash blonde baby-lights. This approach will provide a kiss of sunlight to your hair, as if you have just left the Bahamas. it is important not to go too overboard on the highlights....... applying just enough to accent the darker colors. I can assure you that this formula always works, leaving you with a sophisticated and classic look.

If you're open to a less traditional approach, you may want to consider colored conditioners! Now I know what you're thinking: colored conditioners? Hear me out. If you like fashion colors and healthy locks, color conditioners are definitely the way to go! If you have any experience with 'fashion' color, you know what a toll it can take on your hair. As I said before, its amazing how quickly 365 days can go by and how quickly you may change your mind concerning hair colors. With 'fashion' color conditioners, you can have the benefit of changing up you look, while maintaining a healthy head of hair.  Its conditioner! Rose gold, topaz, magenta, violet? Imagine the possibilities ( they make awesome stocking stuffers too!) Its a east as washing your hair and leaving in the color conditioner in for a certain amount of time. For a more temporary look, 2 to 5 minutes. Want something more permanent? Leave the conditioner in for 30 to 40 minutes. It really is dependent on the intensity you're seeking. It fades just like color. All that is left to do is enjoy the holiday season and love your hair!

Sometimes Less Is More

Do you ever see someone with a really cute and fun short haircut, and wish that you could have
their style? I hear that all the time from people with long hair who want to go short, but are either
afraid of change, or afraid of looking too masculine. Short hair can be very empowering for a
woman of any age, especially when the cut is specifically tailored to her own personal style.
With trends constantly changing, it can be difficult to decide on the haircut that best
suits you and your lifestyle. This doesn’t have to be a challenge if you have a good hair
stylist. When making the decision to go short we often have a certain “look” in mind.
However, our mental image of what would looks good, does not always translate into a
good haircut. This is when you should let your stylist take the reins, it is what they are
trained for.

One of the main things to take into consideration with short hair, is texture. If you
have naturally curly hair, then this is something you know very well. The last thing a
woman with curly hair wants is to feel like she is walking around with a big ball of frizzy
curls, instead of a flattering hair style. With that being said, let’s talk about the angled
bob, which is one of my favorite styles. Especially when it comes to the curly hair guests
that likes the versatility of a short style that looks great curly, yet is long enough to make
straightening easy and manageable. When it comes to living through the humidity of
North Carolina summers, manageability of the style is important for curly hair. Another
great option for style support of curly hair is a Natural Keratin Smoothing Treatment. This
treatment uses keratin, which is a naturally occurring protein, to seal the cuticle layer of
the hair shaft. This sealing action works to nourish the hair shaft and prevent frizz.
If you are looking for something a little shorter and with a touch of sass, then a pixie
might be perfect for you. When someone mentions a pixie the first thing that
automatically comes to mind is the classic black and white image of Twiggy from the
60’s. This is by far one of the most fashion forward haircuts a woman can have, because
it makes a statement. I’ve always loved this haircut since it looks different on every
woman. Every time a guest with long hair sits in my chair and shows me pictures of a
pixie with lots of loose texture, and a short fringe, I get excited. This is where I put my
skills to work to create a completely bespoke haircut that is unique to my guest’s
features. Another great thing about a pixie is that it really shows off a woman’s best
facial features.

The main thing most women tend to worry about when cutting their hair this short, is
the dreaded fear of looking too much like a boy. In my professional opinion, most women
that have this concern typically do not have anything to worry about. That’s where the fine
details of the style really come into play. If I know my guest wears glasses the majority
of the time, I will shape her fringe and ear line to compliment her frames. This goes back
to the fine detail work and customization of the haircut that transforms it into a bespoke
style.

My #1 haircut is the “I want to cut all my hair off” haircut. If you read Cosmo in the
90’s, I’m sure you heard horror stories like this. Don’t believe the hype. I’m not telling you
to cut all your hair off, but if you are considering it, then go for it!!! For whatever
reason, damage, change, breakup; don’t be afraid to go short.

Grey hair, what do we do about grey hair? Own it, love it, because it’s what your mom
has. I am a colorist, but my passion is deeply rooted in haircutting. I have a handful of
clients with the most beautifully marbled salt and pepper hair, that 20 somethings on
Instagram want to have. They have decided to embrace their grey and opt for a funky and fun
pixie cut, because it’s youthful look is timeless and easy to style.
Once you’ve found a short haircut you love, keep in mind that sometimes less is
more. Meaning that even though you’ve reduced style times, you may have to make
more frequent trips to the salon. We recommend every 4-5 weeks to maintain your style.
If you have been thinking about changing it up and going short, now is time to come see
us at DSparada. If you already have short hair, but just haven’t found the cut that is right
for you, we invite you to come have a complimentary consultation. We look forward to
seeing you!
