Balayage? Ombre? Sombre? Everything you need to know!

When it comes to highlighting and hair techniques, it can be really hard to tell the difference considering they're so similar. Don't fret! We've got you covered. I'm gonna tell you how to differentiate so when you want something new for the summer, you'll be able to let us know exactly what you want!
Balayage is one of the most popular hair trends to ever happen! It actually derives from the French word meaning to sweep, as in to sweep in the hair lightener to create natural sun-kissed highlights. It's a hand painting technique that creates a soft graduation of lightness towards the ends. It's not just for blondes! It's great for every shades of color and adds a lot of dimension to the hair! This technique also helps prevent regrowth lines, and it allows the color to grow out a lot more naturally. The finished product is going to have you looking like you just spent a whole summer at the beach! Balayage typically also starts away from the roots towards the mid-shaft and all the way through to the ends.

They are considered a "style" rather than a "technique". Ombré comes from the French word meaning "shadow". Ombré is considered a more drastic and edgier version of balayage. Generally this works better on brunettes, or darker hair so it's less subtle! It's color that is shaded and graduated in tone throughout the hair.

Sombré on the other hand, is a lot softer than an Ombré. This style you'll probably see a lot more in blondes. The key to achieving a Sombré is to use more colors. Take the darker color found at the roots and subtly weave it through the hair to create a less abrupt contrast in the hair! It also allows a nice sunkissed look, with only 1-2 levels lighter than the base color. The point of it is, to be a seamless transition from the roots to the ends.
